This Saturday marks the 2nd annual release of Constance: Delicate Burdens. Constance is an annual arts journal focusing on contemporary art by New Orleans natives and residents. This year the book release party is doubling as an opening for a group show featuring the artists who were included in the book at Barristers. The opening is this Saturday, March 1st. See the flyer for more details. Noted photographers who will be showing work include Frank Relle and Lee Crum along with many other artists of various disciplines.

Jarbas Lopes on Camp Street

Join artist Jarbas Lopes tomorrow, Saturday February 23, at 10am, at 828 Camp Street, for the mudding of his “barraco” to the sounds and smells of Brazil.

Rio-based artist Jarbas Lopes spent two weeks in New Orleans last January to build a “barraco”, a small hut made out of bamboo, for Something from Nothing, a group exhibition curated by Dan Cameron that opened at the CAC on January 18 and will remain on view until March 23. Lopes is back in New Orleans this week for the completion of his project with a day-long performance of cooking and dancing while the walls of the barraco are filled with mud.

Southern Belles from Hell: The Impact of Feminism on Contemporary Art in Louisiana, Part 1

The legacy of feminism might not be the first thing coming to mind when considering contemporary art in Louisiana. An outgrowth of the civil rights and anti-war movements characterizing the American 1960s, the feminist art agenda exposes gender-based obstacles and seeks to dismantle hierarchy.

This past Sunday, P.S.1/MoMA opened “WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution”, featuring more than 400 artworks created between 1965-80 by 120 artists, mostly in the Western hemisphere. Among these celebrated by the extensive exhibit is Lynda Benglis (b.1941) from Lake Charles, Louisiana, who received a BFA from Newcomb College at Tulane in 1964. That same year she moved to New York: one step closer to becoming the legendary the sculptor and video artist who posed nude- with a huge dildo and terrible tan- inside the pages of an Artforum advertisement ten years later.

Included in the survey at P.S.1 through May 12 are Female Sensibility, 1973; Mumble,1972; and Odalisque (Hey, Hey Frankenthaler),1969. Even today, these pieces by Lynda Benglis feel provocative. In fact, her work may still be very ahead of its time. As of yet there are no regional events from LA, MS or ALA participating in the Feminist Art Project at Rutgers.

Is it conservative or edgy to paint the bayou today? Might environmental activism be approached by simply putting the brush to canvas, depicting locations such as Cocodrie? Majestic waters fill the picture plane in Brooks Frederick's plein air panoramas, illuminating estuaries lying between the Mississippi and Atchafalaya Rivers- about 85 miles south of New Orleans and home to the LUMCON laboratory.

Featuring more than fifty paintings and drawings, Frederick's recent landscapes depicting the Louisiana coastal wetlands are among the highlights offered by a new solo exhibition in Lake Charles. Based in Brooklyn for the last eight years, Frederick is a native of Houma who trained at an early age in color visualist technique with Henry Hensche . After attending LSU-BR and McNeese, he received a Masters from the New York Academy of Art in 2005. These days Frederick is influenced by Lennart Anderson, and seeks painted representation that offers us new possibilities for classic forms.

N.O. Public Art Commissions

Call to Artists: Joan Mitchell Foundation and Arts Council of New Orleans Public Art Commissions

In collaboration with the Joan Mitchell Foundation, the Arts Council of New Orleans will commission and install ten exterior public art pieces throughout the City of New Orleans. The commissions provide the opportunity for local and regional artists to showcase their work parallel to the international exhibits: Sculpture for New Orleans and Prospect One International Biennial. Proposals will be accepted provided the artwork is durable, meets safety regulations, and can be installed for a minimum of two years. Contemporary, innovative proposals are encouraged.
Eligibility: Gulf Coast Painters and Sculptors affected by Katrina/Rita
Ten Commissions: $25,000 each
Application Deadline: April 7, 2008 5pm
Installation: October 2008

New York Foundation for the Arts newest issue of it's online magazine Current is all about New Orleans. The issue includes:

- A roundtable with Ron Bechet, Allan Eskew, Courtney Egan, and Joy Glidden on what it means/take to be a NOLA artist/arts administrator in post-K NOLA
