mind-blowing maps of the Mississippi

I first ran across these maps at the blog Pruned. The US Army Corps of Engineers cartographer Harold Fisk charted the "ancient courses of the river," in colors coded by era. Pruned also links to hi-res files of all the plates. It's a fascinating look at how the river has changed over the millenia. Also, here's a link to all the maps pieced together.

I thought I'd seen it all...
I deal with the history of the River pretty frequently doing my day gig.
I am now going to quit my job and spend all of my time worshipping this map, this word o' god that you have made us aware of.
At last, a Plan for my life!
(really incredible map)

Beautiful, right? Both maps are featured in a wonderful book called "Mississippi Floods," beautiful in its own right. Where will I see you next, so I can have it in hand for you to borrow?
